Manager's Guide to
Disability Inclusion
From passive awareness to active, measurable inclusion. A practical framework for leaders building workplaces where everyone belongs.
A diverse group of colleagues collaborating warmly in a modern, light-filled workplace — people with and without visible disability working together naturally.
Section 1
Introduction and Framework Overview
As an inclusive workplace leader, your primary objective is to transition from passive awareness to active, measurable inclusion. The IncludeAbility project, an initiative of the Australian Human Rights Commission, provides the strategic framework for this work.
IncludeAbility is a premier resource designed to increase employment opportunities for people with disability and to ensure organisations provide accessible work environments. All practices must align with the rights established under the Disability Discrimination Act.
Employer Network
Executive leaders from Australia's largest businesses committed to inclusive hiring.

Section 2
Inclusive Recruitment and Attraction
Align talent acquisition with international best practices by removing systemic barriers that exclude qualified candidates with disability.
Easy Read Materials
All recruitment advertisements, position descriptions, and application forms must be available in Easy Read format to support candidates with diverse cognitive needs.
Strategic Disclosure Guidance
Integrate IncludeAbility's identification guide into the application phase, giving candidates the safety and clarity to disclose their requirements early.
Review Position Descriptions
Audit core requirements to ensure they do not inadvertently exclude candidates. For example, avoid requiring a driver's licence for a desk-based role.
Leverage Lived Experience
Consult Ambassador Advisory Group case studies on the IncludeAbility portal to identify common recruitment barriers and successful mitigation strategies.
Digital Accessibility Audit
Ensure your organisation's application portal is fully compatible with assistive technologies, including screen readers.

A hybrid meeting in progress with an Auslan interpreter present, captions visible on a screen, and team members engaged and attentive across the room and video call.
Section 3
Hosting Accessible and Inclusive Meetings
Accessible meetings are not a courtesy. They are a requirement for cognitive and physical accessibility.
Pre-Meeting Preparation
Circulate agendas and reading materials at least 24 to 48 hours in advance, critical for participants using screen readers or who require additional processing time.
Proactively ask all participants if they require Auslan interpreters, live captioning, or specific digital formats before the meeting occurs.
Technology and Environment
Ensure physical and digital environments are well lit to assist participants who rely on lip-reading.
Use only meeting platforms that support accessibility features such as automated captions and keyboard-only navigation.
Real-Time Engagement
Require all speakers to state their name before speaking to assist those with vision impairments or those using transcripts.
Verbally describe any visual content, slides, or charts presented during the session.
Implement a strict one speaker at a time policy to prevent overlapping audio, which can be processed poorly by hearing aids and transcription software.
Section 4
Developing Reasonable Adjustment Policies
Formal reasonable adjustment policies are the legal and operational foundation of a disability-confident workplace.
Consultation with Lived Experience
Develop policies in direct consultation with people who have lived experience of disability. Utilise the Ambassador Advisory Group as a benchmark for real-world perspectives on what makes an adjustment genuinely effective.
Transparency of Process
The policy must explicitly define the request process, the internal review mechanisms, and a guaranteed timeframe for implementation to eliminate employee uncertainty.
Safe Disclosure Integration
Embed guidance on how and why an employee might identify as having a disability, ensuring they feel secure that disclosure will lead to support, not discrimination.
Section 5
Monitoring Progress: The Health Check Tool
Continuous improvement requires data-driven assessment. The IncludeAbility Health Check is your primary mechanism for auditing organisational progress.
Access the Portal
Navigate to the IncludeAbility web portal to initiate the Health Check assessment.
Conduct the Assessment
Answer diagnostic questions covering recruitment, retention, and the physical and digital accessibility of your workspace.
Gap Analysis
Review results to identify specific deficiencies compared to Australian Human Rights Commission best-practice standards.
Consult Expert Guidance
Use the FAQ video series featuring Disability Discrimination Commissioner Dr Ben Gauntlett to address complex implementation hurdles.
Iterative Review
Re-administer the tool every six months to verify that inclusive changes are being sustained and built upon.
