Mario’s Story: A Personal Goal

Initially: Mario wanted to drive but had been told at the time of his injury that he could no longer do this. He didn’t know if he would have the skills and capacity to do the assessment. After a conversation with the Project Officer on goals to achieve, Mario went back to his Neurologist to ask if he could retake the Driving Assessment for Acquired Brain Injury.

After: Mario – Once he had passed the driving assessment, Mario undertook the Driver Knowledge Practice Test until he felt confident enough to go Online for the real thing. He has commenced Learner Driver Training enhancing his capabilities to get around independently in his personal life and open opportunities at work as a delivery driver. He has recently passed his Driver Knowledge Test and can now get out on the road!!!

Before iBOX: Previously Mario was cautious to try many things on his own and his shyness stopped him from taking part in the community without support.

After iBOX: Mario enjoyed keeping himself fit so much, his confidence grew and he requested to find a local gym he could join. Gateway Life was identified as having the equipment and support he would need. This helped with his confidence using public transport to and from the location, paying for membership and meeting with the team to speak about the facilities at the gym.

Before Power of Storytelling: Mario liked the sound of creating his own story using his personal experience although lacked the capacity, skills and knowledge to attempt this on his own.

After Power of Storytelling: Mario was intrigued to learn more about creating his own story and after making sure there was an option for support and the ability to complete the course at his own pace; purchase a course to complete.

Performing in Public – After his success in compiling the We Belong Song below, Mario gained the confidence to perform in public and in conjunction Wests Illawarra, a spot was made available for Mario to come and perform one of his previous songs he had put together at music therapy.

Emily’s Story: Growing with the We Belong Program

Emily joined the We Belong Program to grow her skills and build confidence within the community. Emily loved her experience, joining iBOX Workshop, where she discovered the benefits of fitness and the joy of exercising with others.

The Flagstaff team continued to support Emily’s journey, helping her enrol in a Certificate II in Applied Digital Technologies TAFE course. Whilst studying, Emily was keen to expand her communication skills and explore new ways to connect with others, so she participated in the Art of Conversation Workshop. Her enthusiasm for community involvement only grew. Emily later joined the Street Beatz Hip Hop Dancing Workshop, where she improved her coordination and learnt some new dance moves!

By the end of the year, Emily’s growth was clear to everyone around her. With her new skills and self-assurance, she was chosen as an ambassador to speak at the Vincentia Inclusion Awareness Event. There, she shared her insights as a person with lived experience, inspiring local organisations and showing just how much the We Belong program had helped her become an active, engaged member of her community.

Emily was keen to meet new people and discover new things. Thanks to We Belong, Emily exceeded her goal; she gained a newfound confidence, whilst improving her motor skills and skill set.

Before Art of Conversation: Emily had taken part as a speaker before although was not quite confident enough to give it a go on her own. She wanted to expand her skills speaking on her own and was given the opportunity to be a guest speaker at the Inclusivity Awareness Seminar

After Art of Conversation: After being given a brief outline of the event, Emily then came up with her own content to be a guest speaker and expand her knowledge in the skill of Public Speaking

Before We Belong: While being highly involved with workshops in We Belong, Emily was still uncertain of taking the next step to get out in the community. Each Workshop she participated in gave her a little more confidence and built up her resilience to try new things.

After We Belong: Once she had the Art of Conversation and Guest Speaking under her belt helping to build the tools and skills needing to go into the community, Emily continued to expand her skill base with further training at TAFE in Wollongong. This provided her with the chance to participate with others on campus. Through the strategies she identified with the Art of Conversation Workshop she has reached her goals and now works out in the community with an improved capacity and resilience.

Emily – Personal Goal

I’m an Expert: Happy to participate in the Codesign Committee, Emily was excited to learn she was considered an Expert with her knowledge in Lived Experienced. This built up her confidence to contribute and give valuable feedback throughout the project and when developing resources for participants and the community.

Rachel’s Story: Taking Centre Stage

Rachel loves acting! Before We Belong launched, Rachel was an active member of her community drama group, but she felt a need to grow her confidence in public speaking.

Under We Belong, Rachel joined the Art of Conversation Workshop to develop her public speaking skills. After four weeks, Rachel felt even more confident, especially in acting on stage in front of a large audience or taking on bigger roles in her drama group.

Congratulations Rachel on achieving your goal with We Belong!

Rachael @ Merrigong Theatre

Before Toastmasters: Rachel loved being part of a local drama club, dressing up and performing on stage. After landing a big role, her confidence went down a bit speaking in front of an audience.

After Toastmasters:  Her chance to practice speaking in front of groups came up with the workshop and allowed the opportunity to rebuild her confidence and capacity speaking with people she had not previously known helping her with new members of her drama class and audiences in the community.

Scott’s Story: Joining a Dance Group

Scott joined We Belong to go outside of his comfort zone and found himself participating in the Street Beatz Hip Hop Workshop. Each week, Scott was excited to dance with his friends and others out in the community. His confidence increased, so much so he even broke out into his own moves!

Congratulations Scott! We are proud of you for gaining a newfound confidence.

Shawn’s Journey: Courage, Confidence and Community.

For many years, Shawn has struggled with self-confidence and felt that his voice wasn’t being heard. Wanting to change this, he asked his employer, Flagstaff Laundry if he could become a tour guide for visitors. This became a turning point, helping him build confidence, speak in public and connect with others. Today, Shawn proudly guides visitors through the laundry and inspires those around him.

Shawn continued growing by joining Flagstaff’s Resilience Crusaders program and the Co-Design Reference Group, ensuring people with disability have a voice in shaping programs and supports. He then took part in the We Belong Speechcraft Workshop, where he developed communication skills and found a strong sense of belonging in sharing stories.

As Shawn progressed, he decided to improve his reading and writing skills – We Belong found a local solution, Wollongong Library’s Read and Write for Life Program which offers one-on-one tailored tutoring. The weekly sessions have transformed Shawn’s confidence and ability to engage with others.

Shawn’s journey reflects the We Belong program’s commitment to breaking down barriers, fostering inclusion and empowering people with disability to share their voices. Through storytelling, workshops, co-designed resources and tailored support, We Belong creates safe pathways for people to connect, grow and participate fully in community life, building a more inclusive future, one story at a time.

Before Toastmasters: Shawn Carey is a friendly, helpful person with great personal skills. He had trouble with the reading and writing aspects of daily tasks which prevented him from taking on more responsibility both at work and in his personal life.

After Toastmasters: Shawn requested to find a one-on-one reading and writing tutor following the workshop after this highlight his need to improve his skills in this area. He currently attends a Read and Write for Life Program run by Wollongong Library. The tutoring commenced in September 2025 and goes for a session once a week over 52 weeks also helping Shawn with resilience and commitment to complete training.

Tel’s Story: Dancing with Passion

Tel enjoys interacting with others and loves to box and dance! When We Belong launched the iBOX Workshop and Street Beatz Hip Hop Dancing Workshop, Tel was the first person to join.

Tel enjoyed making new friends and learning new skills in both workshops. Tel even signed up for extra dance lessons with the Dance Studio every week, connecting him to a new group in the community, doing something he is passionate about.

Well done, Tel! Through We Belong, Tel has found new friendships, learnt new skills and connected with new parts of the community.

Before Street Beatz Hip Hop: Tel Fuller loves to dance and express himself, his non-verbal communication limits his capacity to enter the community to take part in after-work activities.

After Street Beatz Hip Hop: Tel enjoyed expressing himself through hip hop dancing enough to attend weekly classes and build in confidence and capacity in the community. He uses transport to the venue, involves himself with others in the class and pays for his classes each week helping him to understand the value money and of interaction with staff.

Zac’s Story: For the love of Golf

Zac’s love of Golf seen him join the Kembla Grange Golf Club to improve his skills around the green.  He had a Kidney Transplant in 2018 and decided to enter the Transplant Games in 2024.  He won 3rd place in the Individual Competition and his experience participating in this event has allowed his talents and skills to be displayed on a national level boosting his confidence.

Since then, Zac has even taken on the challenge to go and play Golf overseas. The confidence he has gained allowed him to navigate his way through unfamiliar places in a land where he did not know the language.

We are so proud of your achievements Zac!

Laura’s Story:  Aspiring Enterpeneur

The We Belong Project Officer (Bec) suggested I check out an Inclusive Markets hosted by Berkeley Neighbourhood Centre in November 2025. This looked to be interesting and would help me selling my Diamond Art and Scentsy (candle) products. I had no idea what was required so met up with Bec for a few meetings to work out a promotional poster and talk about what I may need to get together for a stall. I had a few Diamond Art pictures, magnets and kits that I had built up and was selling Scentsy items again so thought this would be perfect for myself and my brother to sell in a safe environment. This helped with my condition of Intellectual Disability while building our confidence up to get out in the community.

We had our first market with Haven Hub and I enjoyed it so much I went back for the next one at Christmas. They changed the Organisation name to Beacon of Hope Project and moved to Illawarra Yacht Club and by this stage, I had even more to take with me so was able to do a bigger stall.

We had another location move which helped me deal with change on a regular basis and I found myself wanting to help the Beacon of Hope Project and I am now a volunteer assisting to hand out and display upcoming market posters and assist with market set up. I have even been excited by being part of these markets, I decided to add more products to my stall and use new payment methods which helps making more sales.

Before We Belong: Keen to turn her passion into a business, Laura did not know what skills or knowledge she would require. The uncertainty of getting out into the community was due to her confidence interacting and engaging with people not already known to her.

After We Belong: After sitting down to work out a plan for promotion and involvement with a local inclusivity market through Beacon of Hope Project, Laura had strategies in place to build capacity and hold her own stall. Now as a volunteer with the organisation, she assists with administration and promotions while continuing to hold her stall when each market is on.

Beatrice loves to present

Before Toastmasters: Beatrice had a great ability to speak to people and explain about her role and working at Flagstaff. She was uncertain how to structure her conversation and wasn’t overly confident how to go about this.

After Toastmasters: The chance to improve Public Speaking came up and was exactly what Beatrice was looking for. Not only have her public speaking skills improved, but she also even increased her confidence to share her passion in the community for advocacy of people of all abilities.

Holly is boxed over

Before iBOX: An excellent cook and lover of food, Holly enjoyed the daily activities in Fine Foods preparing meals. On hearing about the chance to get out and mingle with others, she jumped at the opportunity to improve her resilience and confidence in the community.

After iBOX: Deciding on a new direction following the Flagstaff Boxing Day Fire which left her position in Fine Foods no longer viable, Holly began learning new skills and expanding her knowledge to build the capacity and confidence to engage with new people. She remains resilient and determined to find a job in the community using newfound skills.

He was excited when approached to be part of the project and eager to learn. He spent weeks practicing making sure he had everything down pat and improved his capacity to sign more words. This improved his confidence and he engaged with the whole team to create the video. He spent weeks practicing, making sure he had everything down pat and improved his capacity to sign more words.
